Chapter Fourteen

Gina had assumed that conversation at the dinner table would be slow moving and at times possibly even nonexistent. After all, she was a stranger to most of the men in Sam’s family, and in her experience, men weren’t always quick to warm up to strangers.

Much to her relief, less than ten minutes into her visit she discovered that this was not the case. She found to her delight that she was greatly entertained by the conversation taking place all around her. Moreover, the Sterling men were going out of their way to pull her into it. She was charmed that they all seemed to be in competition for her attention. She gave it to all of them.

This was not the experience that Sam had painted for her to expect. There was no downtime, no awkward breaks in the chatter. If anything, Sam turned out to be the quiet one. His father and younger brothers were definitely more talkative.

And the food, Gina discovered, was incredibly delicious.

“This is wonderful,” she told Sam’s father after she had sampled everything. The menu had completely whetted her appetite, and each forkful just kept getting better. “Did you have this catered from a restaurant?”

Sanford exchanged looks with Sean, sitting to his right. “Did I have this catered from a restaurant?” he repeated and then laughed. “I’m sorry. So the boys take turns making Sunday dinner,” the man informed Gina proudly.

“Which one of you made this dinner?” she asked, scanning the faces of the five young men at the table.

Simon, the divorce lawyer, raised his hand. “That would be me.”

“These have to be the best spareribs I’ve ever had,” Gina told him with enthusiasm. “You should be very proud of yourself.”

Simon shrugged off her compliment as if embarrassed by it. “Pride has nothing to do with it. It’s a matter of practicality.”

“Practicality?” Gina questioned, slightly confused. She could think of a lot of words that might be applicable to this family meal, but practicality was not one of them.

“What Simon is saying,” Sean said patiently, “is that he doesn’t want to starve to death, so for him cooking is a simple matter of practical survival. It seems that being a divorce lawyer has completely soured him on the notion that love is a lasting emotion. So knowing how to get around in the kitchen is extremely necessary.”

“He’s not serious, is he?” Gina questioned, turning toward Sam. The lawyer’s philosophy sounded like a terrible way to approach life.

“Oh, Simon is most definitely
